Into the Fridge 🫡
Rose Anderson on ginger sparkling water and waking up at the same time daily
Rose Anderson 🫡
Rose Anderson is the author of The Rose Period, a newsletter about special, unusual, and unexpected stories from the art world. She’s also the brand director of Alex Mill, and lives in Brooklyn with her boyfriend. Most importantly, though, Rose is my dear friend, so it’s my great pleasure to have her on this week’s extra special Into the Fridge.
What is your fridge philosophy?
Shove it in there. For being a Virgo, I take fridge rules very loosely. I’m constantly rearranging things and putting groceries wherever they feel right. Lemons in the cheese drawer? It’s pretty. Whatever!
Maybe it’s the inner artist in me (or maybe I need help?). Since this has turned into a fridge confessional, I have to admit—I do have an issue with putting caps back on all the way. It drives everyone I’ve ever lived with nuts.
Your fridge is always always always stocked with ____.
Ginger sparkling water from Wegmans. Another confession: I hate drinking water. I’ll take it in any other form.
Grapes. I’m sort of addicted. Hot tip: freeze them for an elite snack.
Kombucha. I’ve tried every brand but I always go back to the OG Synergy.
PICKLES!!! I LOVE PICKLES.
My newest piece of fridge jewelry aka my new Ho Ho rock. I’m obsessed with my new parasocial artist friend @bettyrubblenyc who makes these incredible rock sculptures of everyday objects. I swiftly procured a Ho Ho for the inside of my fridge - it’s very Claes Oldenburg. I want this Saltines one next.
Top 5 condiment picks, go.
Lao Gan Ma Chili Crisp - IYKYK historic stallion in the era of fancy chili crisp is. This is 5 dollars and has been around since the 80s. It also makes an excellent hostess gift.
Noma Projects Corn Yuzu Hot Sauce - I brought home from a photoshoot in Copenhagen, used it up, and had to order more :/
Gochujang - my Korean coworkers say I was Korean in my past life and I have to agree.
Huy Fong Sriracha - a classic.
Pesto - cook your eggs in it instead of olive oil. Life. Hack.
Fine, I’ll open it up to pantry too. Let’s hear your favorite snacks / pantry staples:
Popcorn: the old-fashioned kernels because I don’t have a microwave. Best snack.
A meal that’s on heavy rotation these days:
I’m a soup girl all year round, but right now it’s chilli season! Devouring this.
Let’s go a little deeper…
What’s the mantra you keep coming back to?
“Done is better than perfect.” My friend Marie bestowed this mantra onto me, and I swear it’s the thing that keeps me unstuck. It’s so easy to get caught up in doubt—this helps me MOVE ON!! Enough!!
What products / practices are part of your regular mental wellness habits?
I’m old school—fresh air, waking up at the same time every day, and calling my mom. I try to keep it simple. It’s so easy to overcomplicate it.
And your physical?
Working out is the only thing that keeps me sane. Even if it’s just a walk outside, I need to get up and be active or my brain will haunt me.
What do think is the most underrated part of wellness?
Don’t forget the power of just doing what you love. Going to a museum for me is often just as therapeutic as a call with my actual therapist.
And overrated?
Anything that’s happening in “morning routine” videos on Instagram.😂 Omg, why so many steps?! Who has the time?!
Picture this: you wake up one morning and feel like shit. What’s your next move:
Go on a long walk outside (even if it’s freezing, the cold is good for dopamine!) and listen to an audiobook (I just finished Dutch House by Ann Patchett) or phone a friend (better yet, they come with you).
Give us your ride or die wellness products:
I take magnesium at night, lion’s mane in the morning, and wear SPF. That’s about it!
One thing you do everyday that makes you the most YOU version of yourself:
I try to post a Substack note every day. It’s become my morning ritual, a creative way to wake up my brain and an excuse to share what I love.
Whose taste inspires you?!
Somsack Sikhounmuong - our creative director at Alex Mill and one of my dear friends. In high school, he won the award for “says the most by saying the least” which pretty much explains everything about his taste. He has an eye for the special and the unexpected, but always in a quieter, not complicated way. He’s also an incredible collector (see: his insane vintage collection and his Cup of Jo house tour).
Isabella Stewart Gardner — has anyone been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston? This is the leading lady behind it.
Sorry for mini history lesson but you asked! ISG was a turn-of-the-century Boston socialite and daring art collector who turned her home into a Venetian palazzo - and then, famously, into a museum (still arranged exactly as she left it). She had THE EYE: discovering artists before they were cool, hosting eccentric parties (including flying musicians in from Europe), and traveling constantly to find the unexpected. She even brought a literal Venetian ceiling home from Italy and built it into her home.
Goals = approaching life like her. Birdlike instincts, unflinching conviction, immaculate taste.
P.S. Read her biography to feel inspired!!
A special treat from Rose:
A curation of fridge art. We are all so lucky.
