Oh I know, this is suchhhh a problem. I should do a whole tutorial on this. Something I've seen is to look at your "On This Day" album which shows all the photos that were taken on this but, but every year, and just sorting through those. It's a funner way than going through en entire month because you see little tidbits of your life across the years!
