Tyler McGillivary π
Tyler McGillivary is the founder and designer of her eponymous clothing line, Tyler McGillivary. She builds her collections around nostalgia, and a love of the rare and beautiful parts of our planet. She says her pieces are meant to evoke wonder and spread joyfulness, and as a longtime fan of hers, I can personally attest. Iβm also happy to announce that her fridge (and life in general) is just as wonderful. Letβs get into it.
What is your fridge philosophy?Β
I very rarely cook and use my fridge primarily for snacks and desserts. I would say Iβm βfreezer forwardβ in that my favorite fridge items are various kinds of little oven baked bites and ice cream bars.
Your fridge is always always always stocked with ____.
Dips, feta cheese in oil, takeout, wine
Top 5 condiment picks, go.
Chipotle mayo
Soy sauce
Ketchup
Dijon mustard
Special sauce
Fine, Iβll open it up to pantry too. Letβs hear your favorite snacks / pantry staples:Β
Canned fish (preferably fancy)
Eight different pasta shapes and pasta sauces
A meal thatβs on heavy rotation these days:
The classic Acai Bowl from Playa Bowls I cannot stop getting. Thereβs one near our studio and I need to start wearing a disguise because Iβm sure the staff is concerned about my fixation.
Letβs go a little deeperβ¦Β
Whatβs the mantra you keep coming back to?
I constantly think about this Ira Glass quote and have quoted it 100 times in vague summary. He says something like (this is not the exact quote): βwhen you start trying to excel at something, your taste outpaces your abilities. So it can be frustrating and stunting to your practice when you feel the gap between your taste and your skill level. The people who succeed are the ones who keep going when they experience that failure.β This mentality is at the core of truly everything I do.
What products / practices are part of your regular mental wellness habits?Β
Hours long wine and gossip sessions with friends
Nights alone
Naps
Getting out of New York and also coming back
And your physical?
Iβm a huge Weleda Skin Food user
I love Osea Ocean Cleanser
tennis at 6am with one of my dearest friends
long walks with headphones on
What do you think is the most underrated part of wellness?Β
Allowing yourself time to rot in bed.
And overrated?
In general, Iβm pretty against the consistent messaging around βself-betterment.β I think it can be exhausting and unhealthy to feel a need to constantly look better than you do. Thereβs a balance to it. I think you have to find what makes you feel good and go with it, without constantly striving for the next phase of wellness excellence.
Picture this: you wake up one morning and feel like shit. Whatβs your next move:Β
Okay at peak hangover: I get up, smoke a joint. Then Iβll order a sausage egg and cheese from Greenbergβs Bagels. While Iβm waiting for it to arrive, Iβll walk to Corto in Bed-Stuy and get an iced cappuccino and hope that I donβt run into somebody I know. Then I will lie in bed until eventually I am moved to lie in the park instead.
Give us your ride or die wellness products:
The best of all time is La Mer The Concentrate. That product is like an elixir of the gods or something. I will never look into that ingredient list.
One thing you do everyday that makes you the most YOU version of yourself:Β
I love to get dressed up and I feel as if it inspires me at the start of a morning. I love to go into a day feeling creative; and since Iβm in a studio surrounded by clothes, I just try on different outfits all day. Itβs an ongoing, ambient source of inspiration.
Whose taste inspires you?!Β
Wow so many people, but a few people whose taste I am absolutely in awe of, who also happen to all sell incredible vintage collections are: Cora Violet Walters, Flamie Love, Real Life as Liv, Shop 925, Toots Vintage.
It was such a treat to get a glimpse at Tylerβs colorful life via her fridge today. Oh, and speaking of treats, her newest collection, Sweet Treat, is now live on her site. Iβm seeing this Bubble Gum Tank in my futureβ¦
